Class Descriptions

Patterns - Mary Jane

Many of the delightful small pattern motifs seen in mittens from Maine and the Maritime provinces of Canada mimic designs found across the ocean, like the Fair Isle and Sanquar patterns of Scotland as well as the all-over patterns of Scandinavia and the Baltic states. Though the primary stranded knitting tradition of this North American region was patterned mittens we will begin to knit a cowl to try out these sweet motifs. Mary Jane will provide a cowl pattern to follow. or, with her help, you can experiment and come up with your own unique pattern arrangements.

(3 hour class.)

Colors That Climb - Lorilee

Stranding color vertically in your knitting offers new possibilities where many colors can be worked at once! We will learn how to introduce strands of contrasting color to our work, how to work with them so they are user-friendly, and how to adequately anchor the stitches without overdoing it. Contrasting yarns are not carried across a row, but instead climb from row to row. To many, it appears as if these colors are embroidered in after the fabric is done. However, everything is knitted in as you go.

Once you learn the tricks in class, the technique is easy to execute and repeat. Everyone can do it to enhance stockinette stitch, garter stitch, cables, and even lace.

The beauty happens in creative applications. Your class handout includes patterns for two options for incorporating this new skill into a small project- colorful wrist warmers. Choose either a cabled design or a lace design which we will start in class and work on while we are aboard ship.

Luminesce: Impactful Crochet Techniques & Energizing Color Palettes

- Vinscent

Explore how to read crochet stitch charts, tips and tricks for selecting energizing color combinations, the infamous magic ring, and multiple ways to join a new ball of yarn, while crocheting meditative stitches and shawl shaping that showcases “perfectly you” color combinations!

To get your pre-class creative juices flowing for this fun crochet journey with Vincent and his Luminesce Shawl, students can think of pairing mini skeins, speckles, or gradient skeins as the contrast to a calm semi solid/tonal colorway.
